Thanks, Caitlin. I wrote this about six months after my daughter died. Since then (it's been 5 years since she died), I've created a little bird ecosystem in my yard - two tray feeders filled with sunflower seed, a nyjer feeder that attracts lots of finches, a safflower feeder for the cardinals, and two suet feeders. Plus three bird houses (and counting). It's my singular obsession (well, that and mushroom foraging).
