It baffles me too. I assume that the majority of Americans don’t really understand how broken the system is because maybe it’s kind of working for them? Maybe they’re getting insurance from their employers and don’t feel the cost of healthcare the way sole proprietors and self-employed people do because our plans have the highest up front costs. If you don’t quite understand how it all works, then it is scary to think of what you do have going away — and it’s confusing. This fear is being exploited by a host of organizations that benefit from the system staying exactly as it is (pharma companies, hospitals, insurance companies, lobbyists, politicians…)
