I'm so sorry for your loss. Your experience of free floating anxiety mirrors my own after I lost my daughter. I think this may be a type of PTSD - the trauma of losing someone so close, even when it's expected, is wrapped up in the anxiety. It'll be eight years for me this March, so this has eased a lot (but I still get anxiety when something triggers me). Big hugs to you.
