I'm a freelance content writer in the B2B martech space, but before that I managed paid search campaigns for clients and agencies (for 15 years). I worked at an agency for a few years before I got laid off in 2002 - that foundation was essential because it taught me how to talk to clients and pitch services (versus selling goods). No one worked remotely back then except designers and IT guys - it's a lot different now (and much easier to find remote work).
